Congratulations to all of you who have recently graduated from law school!
Here are a few things to know about practicing law:
- Clients are real people with real problems and those problems are sometimes very, very, serious for them. You can usually walk away at the end of the case, but the trick is to be sure the client also walks away in good shape.
- It’s a dog-eat-dog world in the practice of law. It’s very adversarial and your advocate is only concerned about representing his or her client within the boundaries of the rules of ethics. If your client is going to be stripped bare of assets and dignity, your advocate is not allowed to care. That one is on you.In personal injury law, if your advocate represents an insurance company, he or she doesn’t care one bit about your client or your job, because that is for you to care about. The opposite is true for those representing the opposite sides in these disputes. Sometimes there will be no one to run to and you must bear the burden alone.
- Stay out of court and away from lawyers whenever possible. Make friends outside the profession and decline to talk law with them.
- Find a good woman or man to love and be loved by. Spend your free time with that person. If you don’t love your family enough from day one, it will destroy your life, but if you do, it will make your life.
